What is llms.txt?

llms.txt is a plain Markdown file at the root of your site (yoursite.com/llms.txt), or under the v2 proposal at any path within it. It gives language models and AI tools a short map of your most useful pages: a title, a one-line summary and lists of links grouped under headings.

It's a community proposal (v2, updated August 10, 2026), not an adopted web standard. Having one won't guarantee traffic, rankings or citations. It's cheap to add and easy to get wrong, which is why we built the checker.

What the checker looks at

Each problem has a short code and a plain-English fix. The score is our own 0–100 rule check, not an official validation.

How it works

  1. Paste your llms.txt, or fill in the generator form.
  2. Get your format score and suggested changes.
  3. Copy or download the file, or share a link to your result.

FAQ

Is it free?
Yes. No signup, no account.
Do you store my file?
No. Checking and generating happen in your browser, and the text isn't sent to us. See Privacy.
Will llms.txt improve my SEO?
We can't promise that, and nobody else honestly can either. Treat it as a low-cost signal for AI tools, not a ranking factor.
Is this the official llms.txt validator?
No. We're independent. The proposal lives at llmstxt.org.
llms.txt vs robots.txt?
robots.txt tells crawlers what they may access. llms.txt suggests what's worth reading. They do different jobs.
Is this SEO or legal advice?
No. It's a formatting tool.
