What we test (rule reference)
Rules follow the llms.txt proposal, v2 (updated August 10, 2026), where the H1 title is the only required section. Rules marked "our rule" are our suggestions, not part of the proposal. Recommendations don't change the score.
| Code | What we found | Suggested change | Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| NO_H1 | No H1 title (the only required section) | Start the file with "# Your site name" | −40 |
| MULTI_H1 | More than one H1 | Keep one "# " line; make the others "## " sections | −15 |
| H1_NOT_FIRST | Content before the H1 (a byte-order mark is fine) | Move the "# " title to the top | −10 |
| HEADING_IN_DETAILS | A heading (### etc.) before the first H2; v2 details allow "any type except headings" | Turn it into a paragraph or start an H2 section | −10 |
| BAD_LINK | A list item in an H2 section isn't a Markdown link | Use "- [Title](https://...): optional note" | −10 |
| REL_URL | Relative link (our rule) | Use the full https:// URL | −10 |
| HTTP_URL | http link (our rule) | Switch to https | −5 |
| BAD_SCHEME | javascript:, mailto: or similar (our rule) | Link only to web pages | −15 |
| PATH_NAME | The location you entered isn't named llms.txt | Serve it as /llms.txt or /<folder>/llms.txt | −10 |
| EMPTY / TOO_LARGE | File is empty, or over 1 MB (our rule) | Add a title; or trim it and put full text in llms-full.txt | score 0 |
| NO_SUMMARY | Recommended: a blockquote summary | Add "> What your site is" under the title | 0 |
| NO_SECTIONS | Recommended: H2 sections with link lists | Group links under "## Docs" and so on | 0 |
| EMPTY_SECTION | Recommended: links in every H2 section | Add links or delete the heading | 0 |
The score measures format only, not whether AI tools will use your file. A file that is just "# My Site" scores 100: it meets the only requirement. Subfolder files (e.g. /docs/llms.txt) cover the pages under that folder. Not checked here (needs fetching your site): rel="describedby" / rel="alternate" type="text/markdown" discovery links.
